Does Eastern Medicine have a place in today's healthcare system?

My interest in Traditional Eastern health care was motivated by the sheer simplicity and effectiveness of its technology.

It appears that their technology is based on foundational principles which are the cornerstone of their philosophy.  I have taken some liberties with the wording but I needed to make it relevant to us.

Simplicity is the guiding principle to base a health care system upon.

THEY THOUGHT ABOUT IT.  There were no considerations about the pharmaceutical industries, the doctors, or any other vested interests.  Just the pure simple truth.

These principles are countless but I have found some which are foundational for our practice.
  • You cannot be sick and healthy simultaneously
  • Therefore the more healthful activities you are involved the greater will be your health will be.
but there is a proviso:
It will take time for the health to overcome the sickness.

In regard to the patient's point of view the following information is vital:

Symptoms are the kindness of the body to let you know what is going on inside the body.

The more I thought of this fact the more its brilliance occurred to me.  Really it is the body "talking" to you.   It is the reverse of the basic cornerstone of traditional medicine in this country.  The contrast being, traditionally, symptoms are considered the problem and ANYTHING that is done to alleviate the symptoms IS the cure.

Another major factor is that often people will try to convey their symptoms as their attempt to create a greater understanding for the doctor.  MANY time this conversation is dissuaded.  An attempt to persist with this conversation, especially if the symptoms are resistant to a cure. is considered that "you" are really a hypochondriac.

In eastern health care symptoms are of great interest.  After all YOU are the best at listening to them and in time learn their meanings.  This is vital to decide if and how the body is healing.

We look forward, when necessary, to reorienting people to this so rational form of health care.  Many people have gotten the idea that it is time to look for alternatives.  Factually, there are more visits to alternative doctors presently than to traditional doctors.  Look at the statistics of the efficacy of traditional health care and you may see the need for an alternative.

We are dedicate to this endeavor and have spent many years learning and working with this technology. Many of my practices are based on this philosophy.

The myth of "getting old"

The Myth of " getting old"

As you may have noticed I really like to use analogies in my conversations with patients about their health.

Some of my favorites analogies seem quite relevant to many health related subjects. The one about getting older has particular meaning for me as it has to do with assigning difficulties with your health from aging.

Here is a most common scenario.  A patient will talk to me about their left knee being in constant pain, it hurts most when it is used extensively.  After x - rays and examination, their diagnosis is arthritis.  They were told this condition exists and it is a common event from getting older.  My reaction to this information is, I smile.  They look at me in puzzlement.

I ask them,  " Do you skip when you walk? " , "or have you injured that knee before?"  Their answer is no about the injury and that they never skip.

Next question is have you been on crutches ?  They say no,  starting to get somewhat perturbed from this line of questioning.  Then finally I ask them this question.

How does your right knee feel ?  They pause somewhat and many times say it is fine.  I then ask them how old is their right knee ? So much for the age rationale.

Pain, diagnoses and dysfunction have causes, and often AGE is not the cause!  Undeniably,  age causes you to use the parts of your body longer.  But the condition of the body part is largely based on the nutritional status over the years and consequently how it has repaired itself.  What you eat can have as much of a detrimental effect as what it has been deficient in.

Trauma can have a devastating effect but far too often the tissue is deemed irreparable prematurely.

You can be physiologically younger and chronologically older.

It is based on how you take care of yourself.   Do you notice some people who look young for their age as well as others who have not aged well ?   Another way to view it, is the function of the body capable of healing.  From this point it can be viewed as how well it repairs itself.

If you surveyed the people, who are older and look great about how they have taken care of themselves you will not be surprised by their answers - Usually they have been eating well and exercising consistently and live life with an attitude which is impressive and insightful.

If you consider how you have taken care of yourself you can determine how old you really are.

Here is a checklist you can use:
  1. Do you have any unexplained pains for a long period of time.
  2. Do you have a condition that has not resolved ?
  3. Are you taking any medication which is to mask the pain or problem of a condition?
  4. How long have you been taking this medication ?
  5. Do you sleep well ?
  6. Do you eat well ?
  7. Do you use the bathroom every day?
  8. Do you drink enough fluid every day?
  9. Do you handle stress well?
  10. Are you happy often ?
  11. Do you exercise consistently ?
  12. Is there something you know you need to do for your health but are neglecting ?
  13. Is you energy level stopping you from living your life as you choose ?
  14. Do you work more than 40 hours a week and are stressed at doing it ?
The body has maintenance requirements !  The benefit and liability of meeting these requirements are self evident.  When you take care of yourself you will be rewarded in the long term.

Sometimes as a defense against this premise some will say, but what about "  the person who is a "health food nut" , she exercises all the time and they are now really sick !"  This situation is often baffling and sometimes negates, for some, the necessity for taking care of yourself.

Invariably, when you look closer at this person you will see some profound areas of neglect which have befallen them.
Unfortunately, sometimes they are doing what they think is necessary to be healthy but their information may fall very short of what actually is the case.  I have seen people in this situation and their frustration is profound.

Common sense is the best answer I can give you in these circumstances.

It is almost as firm as a law that if you do the right activities for your health, you can predict the end result.  So I suggest you look at the "questionnaire" I have provided and see how closely you fit to some of these categories.   The health you save IS your own and well worth the effort.

I will help you and it will be my pleasure to do so.

Contrasting this newsletters, I discovered this test to determine your "real age" : https://www.age-test.com

You will notice that it addresses your attitudes towards life and activities.  You may see it puts far more credence on attitude.   A different point of view.  I guess both are vital.Take Charge of your health today!

The Reality of Sugar

The Reality of Sugar

It can be difficult to give up sugar- but your life may depend on it.

I have never felt that I have communicated the importance to avoid sugar sufficiently.

By sufficiently, I mean, that one would not even consider eating it. I have been called fanatical because of it, and one patient even calls me "sugar".

This extreme statement may not be necessary for good health, as moderation is often suggested as an alternative.  But the avoidance of sugar makes it much easier to resist the temptation (addiction) to consume concentrated sugar.  By that first bite, sugar consumption may become a vicious cycle..  It becomes a snowball effect and that is dangerous to your health.  This testimony I have heard from many patients who have beat the sugar habit.

Another thought to help you avoid sugar was to show you statistics about the the rising rates of diabetes in people. Diabetics are getting younger all the time-  IT IS AN EPIDEMIC. These may be our children.

I have seen the awful realization of a parent whose child was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  Many patients have noticed the dietary habits in their children's diet and then realize that they may have been complicit in the creation of this disease.

HARSH, I know, but consider if it may be truthful.

If you think that this is a problem in your household, consider looking into the pantry and seeing what is in there .  A "soft drink"  has up to 12 teaspoons of sugar . The averages revealed by a Yale University Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity found that a majority of Americans understand that soda is bad for them.  Despite this, a Gallup poll reveals that 48 percent of surveyed Americans — nearly half! — drink soda on a daily basis.  What’s more, among those who drank soda, the average daily intake was 2.6 glasses per day.

That is 17 teaspoons of sugar a day.  And that is just their soda.

As with all the alarming statistics that exist on this subject and with full knowledge that I may be creating a numbing effect about this subject, I am still going to reveal them again.
  1. Soda is the largest source of dietary sugar in the diet of children and adolescents.
  2. Liquid sugar — has been associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome and with higher rates of Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and cardiovascular difficulties
You can have a marked change about this !
  1.  Go through your pantry, refrigerator and freezer and throw out ALL products with refined sugar.
  2.  Be a support person for someone in your house.   Group up if possible with another person and promise to help them through this.
  3.  The almost instant benefits ?   more energy ,  less cranky,  better reflexes,  better sleep,  loss weight .

I still feel I am missing the IMPACT that I desire.  I hope this is helpful and I believe if you try this for a month there will be no need for such stringent controls.

Best,

DrMarc

Ah on the positive note.

Alternatives to sugar :

Xyletol
stevia
NO sugar

Alternatives to chocolate:
Lilly's

Alternative to cookies:

Oatmeal raisin cookies can be made healthy and tasty :

Some recent relevant story about the overuse of sugar :

A 12 year old girl was brought to see me by her Mother.   The Mom was quite distraught as she knew her daughter's diet contained far too much sugar.   It had gotten to the point that the child loved to dance and was not able to muster enough strength to get through her routine !

A woman in her forties has come to see us with a hyperactive thyroid.   She had lost a lot of weight and looked unhealthy.   During her report of finding I suggested that she stay away from sugar.   I cannot describe the look on her face but I knew at that point that this would be a point of contention.

A young woman who was having severe panic, anxiety attacks and was close to going on medication for it.  When I checked her it appeared there was a considerable variation of energy in the sugar processing systems.   With considerable problems with blood sugar your moods can be extremely volatile and can experience panic and depression.

After I told her that she would have to modify her diet she revealed to me that she was "addicted to sugar",  she had something very sugary at each meal.   She kept a "stash" of candy in her car, under her bed and in her classroom.   She was not willing to give this up.  After a considerable amount of time and the use of some herbs she progressively did much better.  So much so I hardly recognized her when I saw her.

I could write stories for the rest of the week about children we have been able to modify their diets and how much better they did in life and in school.

So what do you THINK ?

Please write any questions, concerns you have :

How do you know if the treatment of your diagnosis will "heal" your symptoms?

How do you know if the treatment of your diagnosis will "heal" your symptoms?

This question came to my attention from an experience I had with a veterinary student.  She arrived at Alternative Healthcare Center and was experiencing severe migraine headaches.  She had been diagnosed with Arnold–Chiari malformation. This problem blocked the cerebral spinal fluid near the base of the brain.  From her neurologist's opinion - only surgery would solve the problem.

I decided to check her nutritionally and see what I could find.   As you may imagine, she was pretty stressed from studying and considerably sleep deprived.  Consequently her adrenal glands were nutritionally deficient.  I explained to her what I had found and suggested to her a course of action.
She told me,  " what the heck, what could it hurt?'

She started on the supplements and within two weeks her headaches were significantly diminished.

From this experience I have decided, that although from an MRI it was evident that she had this condition,  "you" could not see the pain caused by it.  It was an assumption, although it made sense to me that her condition could cause the headaches.  Probably, often, it was the cause of the headaches in other people with this condition.

So from that point forward I have "ignored" the diagnosis and still proceeded with nutritional care but not abandoning her seeing her neurologist.

There is an eastern philosophy saying about health, which I find to be quite workable.  "You cannot be sick and healthy simultaneously"  The corollary,  "  the more healthful activities you are involved in the more possibility that you will heal.  And like this woman had said," heck what could it hurt" !

You may want to keep this in mind when dealing with health issues.   Each doctor has a specialty and therefore has an opinion based on his training and expertise.  I find that if you can get your body to heal, many of the conditions and symptoms it may have, may very well heal.

To Understand What We Are Doing Enables You To Be An Active Participant In the Process Of :

Taking Charge of Your Health!

We are interested in helping you become the healthiest you can be.

Understanding about your health is the key.

Dr. Marc's Nutrition Response testing explained !

In the beginning of each visit we utilize a Chinese evaluation procedure of observing.  Ancient oriental technique meaning "looking at the body" and understanding by its signs if it's healthy".  The color of the skin, the conformation of the body, how you walk and talk can all be signs of the health of your organs.   For example, if your nails have white spots it can mean you eat too many chemicals or sugar.  If you lose hair from the front part of the head it could mean you are drinking too much liquid and/or eating too many fruits.

Initially we are evaluating your body's function.  Remember our evaluations are energetic and there have been doctors who have spent a considerable amount of time learning how to "listen to the body" to find the answers which are necessary.

Once I have established if you are testable then I evaluate a series of points and determine the energy in each.   This is where you may notice the most dramatic change in the strength in your muscles.   This tells me that there is an alteration of energy in this area.    Each area pertains to certain parts of the body.   All the while we are getting closer to the major area of disturbance.   Once this is ascertained we will check certain nutrition to see if its energy is compatible.

The basic theory is about energy.  The thought being that without energy that systems cannot function. In modern day health care this is most dramatically seen in an EKG.  A flat line reading lets you know that there is no energy in the body.

I like to use the analogy about a house that is hit by lightening.   When the house is hit and all the lights may go off. One does not go around and change all the light bulbs to reestablish the light.  The first thing to do is check the energy (circuit breaker) to the lights and see if they have the electricity necessary to light.

Then once you are certain of this, ( there is sufficient energy coming out of the socket), then you can evaluate the light bulb.  Your body functions similarly, you must normalize the energy first.   It is essential for your organs to have energy for that organ to animate itself.  Basically it is in need of LIFE energy.  There are many different ways to reestablish the energy.  I will write another article just about this later.

Once you establish the energy you can then start to help nutritionally feed the organ or cleanse the organ.  This process is to help that system function.  The body is made of nutrients and without them it is not possible for it to recreate. The easiest way to determine the health of the body is based on the person's ability to heal.  It is somewhat of a challenge to help someone heal as most people feel that when the symptom is gone so is the condition which caused it.

It is vital to see that dysfunctions in your body can happen over a long time.

The basic philosophy is health is a journey not a destination.

Many people do not have a firm grasp on how alternative or complimentary health care can help them.    In future articles I will write more about the basis for each of them.

Too many people are having trouble unnecessarily without the knowledge that someone can help.  Please let them know we are here for them.
